Birdsfoot Field Trip
On March 29th, 2023, some team members had a wonderful field trip to the Birdsfoot delta. Dr. John Andrew Nyman from LSU guided us to get an overview of the vegetation in the south pass and its distributaries. We also collected some cores of marsh sediments using the Russian Peat Corer.
Dr. Nazmul Beg is going to leave our team to start a new career
By the end of March 2023, Nazmul will leave our team to start a new career. The team gathered to say goodbye and have lunch together for the last time. Thank you, Nazmul, for all the time with us!
Laura Manuel, a Ph.D. Candidate, has published a new paper
This paper presents a roadmap and detailed application of interdisciplinary, co-production strategies where managers and researchers are fully engaged in a collaborative manner in the design of a decision support tool for coastal ecosystems. It also emphasizes the importance of capturing end-users’ (i.e., natural resource managers) priorities to refine the conceptual design of the decision support tool, while maintaining a sound scientific and modeling framework. The case study presented here centers on the Northern Gulf of Mexico, but the concept can be exported globally to other systems. 1-s2.0-S1462901123000631-main
On November 14, 2022, Dr. Meselhe served as a keynote speaker at the Deltares 2022 Software Days. He spoke on Delft3D Research and Modelling Activities.
Visiting Iowa City for our NSF-funded research project was extremely beneficial to our understanding of the project scope and study area that we are modeling. We met with our University of Iowa partners to coordinate project tasks and brainstorm. This was a great opportunity to put our heads together and develop some new ideas for moving forward. Seeing Clear Creek and the instrumentation setup provided a clear idea of the system that we are simulating using 1D and 3D numerical models so we may have a more realistic background when evaluating our results.

Laura Manuel Attends and Presents at the ECSA 59 Conference
Hola from San Sebastian, Spain!
Laura Manuel presented her research on the co-development of decision support tools at the ECSA 59 conference. This was a great opportunity to network and learn about similar efforts around the world. The city is located on the northwest coast of Spain, so Laura was able to experience living in a different coastal city for a few days, too!
Tulane School of Science and Engineering Rocket Innovation Challenge: August 2022
On August 25, 2022 members of our research team formed two groups to compete in a rocket building challenge hosted by Tulane’s School of Science and Engineering. The groups had to create a rocket out of paper, velcro, and K’nex and combine kitchen ingredients to create a “rocket fuel”. Laura Mauel, Katelyn Keller, and Emma House were one team and Ali Abdelrahim, Sherif Ahmed, and Ahmed Khalifa formed another. Katelyn, Laura, and Emma won first place in the overall challenge!

Summer Institute: June 2022 – July 2022
Our team supported Laura Manuel, as she spent the summer in Tuscaloosa, AL, as a 2022 Summer Institute Fellow.
The National Water Center Innovators Program Summer Institute (https://www.cuahsi.org/summer-institute) is a seven-week experiential learning program that brings graduate students together with academic researchers, other professionals, and National Water Center staff. Laura worked with a team of researchers to tackle Hydroinformatics themed problems. Her team’s project was titled: “Data Driven Approaches to Estimating Channel Geometry“.

EWRI-ASCE 2022 – June 2022
Dr. Ehab Meselhe, and Ahmed Khalifa had the opportunity to attend the 2022 World Environmental & Water Resources Congress in Atlanta, GA. Networking and learning about the exciting work happening in all over the world made this conference a fruitful experience. Dr. Meselhe, and Ahmed presented their oral presentation titled “Morphodynamic Analysis of the 1927 Caernarvon Crevasse Event“.

GOMCON 2022 – April 2022
Dr. Ehab Meselhe, Dr. Barb Kleiss, and Laura Manuel had the opportunity to attend the Gulf of Mexico Conference in Baton Rouge, LA. Networking and learning about the exciting work happening in the Gulf of Mexico region made this conference a great experience. Dr. Meselhe, Laura, and Dr. Kleiss hosted a workshop, presented a research poster, and had a chance to meet in person with collaborators on their project.

River Science and Engineering Graduate Certificate Presentation – August 2021
At the end of the Fall Semester, three of our team members received their Graduate Certificate in River Coastal Science and Engineering. This ceremony, held at the New Orleans Corps District office, was attended by students and faculty at Tulane and the Army Corps of Engineers, including Dean Kimberly Foster, the Commander of New Orleans District, Colonel Murphy, the Deputy District Chief, Mark Wingate, the Chief of Engineering, Jean Vossen.
